We're Taking a Break!

In order to give the difficult but necessary work of anti-racism in Catholic schools the time it deserves, our team is taking a mental health break for the holidays. Even though we're taking a pause, the fight for more equitable and anti-racist curriculum, policies, and procedures continues on. We've been working nonstop since June, but we know that this is a marathon, not a sprint. We're going to spend time with our families and friends, reflect on our progress so far, and come back in the new year with renewed energy and momentum.
We want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has shown us support this year, from the 2,500+ individuals and families who signed our petition to those who have shared our stories, grown our network, and advocated for our work to the individuals that can enact change. None of this would be possible without you.
In 2021, we'll return to our mentorship program, our meetings with the Diocese, and our work supporting current students of color. We hope you'll take a breather as well and be ready for more actions and noise in the new year. In the meantime, our DMs and email inbox are still open - please reach out at any time with questions or concerns, either via direct message or to xcpalumniforchange@gmail.com.

We are current and former students of Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, AZ and we invite you to join us in our mission. We seek to cultivate an atmosphere of equity and inclusion at the school. What does this mean? We believe young minds must be offered curriculum that exposes them to the rich variability of the many cultures and histories present in society. We believe to fully meet this end, curriculum must pay tribute to racial injustices that intertwine these histories. Ultimately, the goal of these efforts is to enhance the formation of young minds set to lead our future world. To start, we propose the following actions items:
If you are involved in the Xavier community and are curious about this cause, please read our petition and consider signing on.
If you are involved in another Catholic preparatory school community and would like help in making an impact on your campus, please reach out to us.
Together, we can be a powerful force.
- integrate anti-racism articles and books to the curricula of Xavier theology, history and English departments
- undertake a third-party, holistic review of Xavier's current equity and inclusion practices
- host speakers to present perspectives on racial injustice
- add professional development for faculty and staff on anti-racism and implicit bias
- encourage and facilitate students of color to form affinity groups with an invitation for allies
- foster a more connected dialogue between alumnae and the school community to focus on continuous improvement
